The Day of the Dead, one of Mexico’s most important and ancient traditions, is a vibrant tribute to departed loved ones, intertwining indigenous rituals and Catholic beliefs. During October 31, November 1 and 2, entire families build colorful altars, decorated with offerings of flowers and food, awaiting the arrival of their loved ones. This fusion of colors, gastronomy, craftsmanship and mysticism has inspired thousands around the world for centuries.
In its quest to distill the essence of this celebration of life, the renowned whisky distillery The Macallan embarked on a journey to Mictlán. The result is the expression “Distil Your World Mexico,” an exceptional single malt accompanied by a piece of art inspired by the Day of the Dead, a documentary that captures the essence of the traditions and a menu that explores rich Mexican gastronomy.
This collaboration between The Macallan, the most prestigious whisky distillery in the world, and the Roca brothers, owners of the acclaimed El Celler de Can Roca, resulted in a series of limited editions, documentaries and culinary creations called “Distil Your World.” The latest release, Distil Your World Mexico, is a masterful creation by Diane Stuart, The Macallan’s Whisky Maker, in partnership with the renowned Roca brothers.
Carefully matured in a blend of American and European oak casks, this extraordinary single malt captures the vibrant character and spirit of this Mexican tradition. With an orange hue reminiscent of the marigold flower, the whisky exudes delightful notes of sweet pan de muerto, creamy vanilla and sweet pineapple.
To create this unique experience, Diane Stuart and Joan Roca explored Mexico City, living alongside people who embody the traditions, craftsmanship and artistic nature of this unique November celebration. “Mexico is full of passion and energy, heightened during the Day of the Dead, creating an exciting atmosphere. We tried to capture that passion and energy in Distil Your World Mexico, exploring The Macallan’s portfolio to find the right flavors to reflect the magic of Mexico,” shares Diane Stuart.
The Roca brothers, famous for their culinary creativity, complement the experience with a complex and daring menu, taking diners on a gastronomic journey through the iconic Day of the Dead tradition. “It is a celebration of life, felt through the aromas, colors and flavors of the prepared food. It is our opportunity to capture the soul of a country in a unique dining experience,” highlights Joan Roca.
The elegant presentation of Distil Your World Mexico, in a white box that displays the marigold flower, also features an exclusive artwork created by illustrator Alfredo Ríos, specializing in representing nature and Mexican folklore.
